Jacksonians looking for ways to relax and reduce stress may find an upcoming free seminar useful. Baptist Health Systems is sponsoring the event at 11 a.m. on May 17. Certified massage therapist Barbie Lyn will teach massage, breathing and the use of soft music to improve relaxation. The seminar is designed for cancer patients and caregivers to reduce the stress that they often experience during the treatment process. Patients going through cancer treatment experience more than just medical complications and side effects from medications and treatments. They also must learn to cope with their diagnosis, loss of income and financial strain due to being unable to work and adapting to changes in their ability to care for themselves and participate in previous activities. Learning how to relax can assist these individuals to better cope with these challenges. Relaxation strategies are also beneficial for cancer patients who have difficulty sleeping or are experiencing extreme side effects due to their treatment. The seminar will be held at the Hederman Cancer Center. There is an optional lunch available for five dollars.
